US Coast Guard slams Deepwater rig’s safety culture

A lax safety culture and poorly maintained equipment contributed to last year’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, the US Coast Guard has reported.

Rig crew had become complacent following routine fire drills that sometimes excused drilling crew, and the rig had not held training drills on how to respond to a well blowout requiring rig evacuation.

The Coast Guard says alarms and automatic shutdown systems did not work properly, crew were not sufficiently trained, and electrical equipment was poorly maintained. Read more at www.healthandsafetyatwork.com
